Porto Alegre es una ciudad y municipio en el estado brasileño de Río Grande del Sur siendo tanto su capital como la ciudad más grande del mismo. Según el censo de 2022, tiene una población de 1 332 570 habitantes. Está ubicada en la conjunción de cinco ríos, entre los cuales se encuentra el río Guaíba (que en realidad es un lago), continuación del río Jacuí poco antes de su desembocadura en la laguna de los Patos.
