Almaty, conocida como Verny durante el periodo del Imperio ruso y hasta 1993 como Almá-Atá, es la ciudad más grande de Kazajistán. Cuenta con una población de 2 039 376 habitantes, aproximadamente el 11 % de la población total del país, y más de 2,7 millones en su área urbanizada, que incluye Talgar, Boraldai, Otegen Batyr y otros suburbios.
