Riga es la capital y la ciudad más poblada de la República de Letonia, con más de un tercio de la población del país. Se encuentra en el golfo de Riga, en la desembocadura del río Daugava. Con un área de 307,17 km², Riga se encuentra en una llanura arenosa próxima al mar Báltico. Fundada en 1201, la ciudad fue miembro de la Liga Hanseática.
