Breslavia es la capital del voivodato de Baja Silesia y la tercera ciudad más poblada de Polonia, con 672 929 habitantes (2021). Está situada en el suroeste del país, junto al río Óder y entre las colinas de Trzebnica y los Sudetes. En Breslavia, confluían dos importantes rutas comerciales: Vía Regia y Ruta del ámbar.
