Dakar es la ciudad capital de Senegal. Su posición al extremo oeste de África resulta ventajosa para el tráfico marítimo con América y Europa, razón por la cual se desarrolló allí el mayor puerto marítimo de la región. Según el censo del año 2023 cuenta con una población de 1 278 469 habitantes y su área metropolitana con una población de 4 250 000 habitantes.
