Samarcanda es la segunda ciudad más grande de Uzbekistán, después de Taskent, tanto en población, como área e importancia industrial. Es a su vez capital de la región de Samarcanda. La Unesco declaró a esta ciudad de 2700 años de antigüedad como Patrimonio de la Humanidad en el año 2001, y fue inscrita como Samarcanda - Encrucijada de culturas.
